Community Emergency Response Team (CERT)

Many members of Milford CERT reside in and around Woodmont. The Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) consists of private citizens who assist their neighborhood/ community when disasters occur and first responders who provide fire and medical services will not be able to meet the demand for these services. Factors such as number of victims, communication failures and road blockages will prevent people from accessing emergency services they have come to expect at a moment's notice through 911.

Using the training learned in the classroom and during exercises, CERT members can assist others in their neighborhood or workplace following an event when professional responders are not immediately available to help. CERT members also are encouraged to support emergency response agencies by taking a more active role in emergency preparedness projects in their community.

CERT members receive training in basic disaster response skills, such as fire safety, light search and rescue, team organization, and disaster medical operations. The primary reason for CERT training is to give people the decision-making, organizational, and practical skills to offer immediate assistance to family members, neighbors, and associates while waiting for help. While people will respond to others in need without the training, the goal of the CERT program is to help people do so effectively and efficiently without placing themselves in unnecessary danger.

In the borough of Woodmont, CERT is sponsored by and under the direction of the Milford Health Department.  If you are interested in becoming a memeber of Milford CERT, call Bruce Varga at 203-783-3285.
